Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua.

Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Genus sometimes considered to incorporate Klais. Validity of subspecies aurea has been questioned.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- abeillei (Lesson & DeLattre, 1839) - South-eastern Mexico to Guatemala, El Salvador and northern Honduras.
- aurea Miller, W & Griscom, 1925 - Southern Honduras and northern Nicaragua.
