Estimated population is 7,000 - 10,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat loss and degradation, mostly for conversion to both small-holder and large-scale cultivation and pasture, trade, are the main threats.

Voice
Varied and raucous, including a shrill 'krih-krih', a rolling 'krreeeih', a deeper 'kyah'ha' and an almost raven-like 'krra krra'.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Red-lored Parrot (Amazona autumnalis).
Proposed northern subspecies woodi very poorly differentiated.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
White-fronted Parrot (Amazona albifrons) which is smaller, with red patch on alula and upper primary coverts. Yellow-headed Parrot (Amazona oratrix) which is told by a heavier build, shorter tail and yellow on head.
