Southern Mexico (from south-eastern Veracruz and Oaxaca) east through Guatemala and central and southern Belize to northern Honduras, central and eastern Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat loss due to logging, human settlement and conversion to agriculture, are the main threats.

Voice
A loud, far-carrying and low pitched nasal 'cuaet cuaet cadack', very similar to that of Broad-billed Motmot (Electron platyrhynchum). Also a long, nasal, corvid-like 'caaaaw'.
