Subspecies
Possibly most closely related to Mountain Trogon (Trogon mexicanus), Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris), Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus), Black-throated Trogon (Trogon rufus) and Blue-crowned Trogon (Trogon curucui). Subspecies generally regarded as falling into two groups, "ambiguus group" north of Isthmus of Tehuantepec and "elegans group" south of there, these sometimes regarded as representing two separate species. Birds in El Salvador and Honduras intermediate between elegans and lubricus. Populations in southern Arizona and north-western Mexico (excluding Tres Marias Is) sometimes separated as subspecies canescens.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • goldmani Nelson, 1898   -  Southern Arizona, and north-western Mexico (including Tres Marias Is).
  • ambiguus Gould, 1835   -  Eastern and south-central Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Coppery-tailed Trogon (Trogon ambiguus).
  • elegans Gould, 1834   -  Guatemala (Motagua Valley), extending into El Salvador and Honduras.
  • lubricus Peters, JL, 1945   -  Nicaragua and north-western Costa Rica.
  • canescens van Rossem, 1934   -  Oak-pine woodlands of southern Arizona to north-western Mexico.
