Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-backed Trogon (Trogon viridis), Baird's Trogon (Trogon bairdii) and Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus) and sometimes considered conspecific with Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

citreolus Gould, 1835 - Pacific slope of Mexico from Sinaloa to Oaxaca.
sumichrasti Brodkorb, 1942 - Pacific coastal plain of Mexico in Oaxaca and Chiapas.
