Subspecies
Distinctive within the so-called "croaking group", which also includes Red-breasted Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus), Choco Toucan (Ramphastos brevis), Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus) and Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco). Not especially closely related to any other species, with nearest relatives probably Red-breasted Toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus) and Choco Toucan (Ramphastos brevis). Subspecies weakly defined, intergrading where they meet.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
sulfuratus Lesson, 1830 - South-eastern Mexico (from Veracruz) south through Belize and Guatemala to Honduras.
brevicarinatus Gould, 1854 - Guatemala, Belize and Honduras south to northern Colombia (R Atrato, lower R Cauca and lower R Magdalena) and extreme north-western Venezuela.
