Subspecies
Sometimes combined with other barred congeners in a separate genus Centurus. Variation is clinal. Population in interior (Morelos, adjacent Michoacán) often separated as subspecies morelensis, tending to be paler with less yellow and orange than flavinuchus, but considerable overlap exists with latter in plumage characteristics.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chrysogenys (Vigors, 1839) - Western Mexico from southern Sinaloa to Nayarit.
flavinuchus (Ridgway, 1911) - Jalisco east to south-western Puebla and south-eastern along coast to eastern Oaxaca.
