Habitat
Grassy understorey of open pine-oak woodland and brushy fields. From 750 - 3,050 m.

Range (Guide)

El Salvador (B) (NB), Guatemala (B) (NB), Honduras (B) (NB), Mexico (B) (NB), Nicaragua (B) (NB).

Southern Mexico, through western Guatemala, eastern El Salvador and Honduras to northern Nicaragua.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Deforestation and habitat degradation due to mining, intensive grazing, extensive burning for grazing, and hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Montezuma Quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae) and may be conspecific. Possible subspecies differens described from Honduras, but not usually considered valid.
