Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,000 - 3,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico.

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 500,000 (2010).

Subspecies
As many as ten subspecies of doubtful validity.

The following 17 subspecies are recognised:

  • pettingilli Warner & Harrell, 1957   -  South-eastern San Luis Potosí­ and south-western Tamaulipas, central-eastern Mexico.
  • thoracicus (Gambel, 1848)   -  North-eastern Puebla and central Veracruz, east-central Mexico.
  • devius Nelson, 1898   -  Jalisco, west-central Mexico.
  • melodus Warner & Harrell, 1957   -  Central Guerrero, south-central Mexico.
  • ginetensis Warner and Harrell, 1957   -  South-eastern Oaxaca and western Chiapas, southern Mexico.
  • edwardsi Warner and Harrell, 1957   -  Western Chiapas, southern Mexico.
  • chiapensis Nelson, 1898   -  Central Chiapas, southern Mexico.
  • moorei Warner and Harrell, 1957   -  Mountains of central Chiapas, southern Mexico.
  • dolichonyx Warner & Harrell, 1957   -  Sierra Madre de Chiapas, Chiapas, southern Mexico.
  • sharpei Nelson, 1903   -  South-eastern Mexico (Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo) and northern Guatemala; possibly also Belize.
  • paynteri Warner & Harrell, 1955   -  South-central Quintana Roo, south-eastern Mexico.
  • calophonus Warner and Harrell, 1957   -  Western Guatemala.
  • salvadoranus Dickey & van Rossem, 1928   -  Volcán de San Miguel, El Salvador.
  • taylori van Rossem, 1932   -  Mt Cacaguatique, El Salvador.
  • fuscus Conover, 1937   -  Tegucigalpa Department, Honduras.
  • rufescens Warner and Harrell, 1957   -  San Juancito Mts, Honduras.
  • conoveri Warner & Harrell, 1957   -  Olancho Department, Honduras.
