Proposed subspecies effuticus (from western Mexico) generally regarded as indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• caerulescens (Swainson, 1827)   -  Western, eastern and southern Mexico (Sonora and south-eastern Chihuahua south to Oaxaca, and south-western Tamaulipas south to Puebla and western Veracruz).
• longirostris Nelson, 1898   -  Tres Marí­as Is, off western Mexico.
