Breeds southern Canada (from Alberta and extreme eastern British Columbia east to south-eastern Quebec and New Brunswick, possibly also Nova Scotia), southern in northern USA to northern North Dakota, northern Minnesota, northern Michigan, northern New York and Maine. Migrates to Central America (extreme southern Mexico, in Chiapas and Yucatán, south to central Panama).

Sometimes placed in a separate genus, Melodivireo. Most closely related to Eastern Warbling-Vireo (Vireo gilvus). One report of hybridization with Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus) in south-eastern Canada (Quebec).
