Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- nitidus van Rossem, 1934 - Southern Sonora, in north-western Mexico.
- hypochryseus (Sclater, 1862) - Western Mexico from Sinaloa south to Oaxaca.
- sordidus Nelson, 1898 - Tres Marias Is, off Nayarit (western Mexico).
