Subspecies
Genus possibly closest to Chiroxiphia and Antilophia. Its four members form a superspecies, and all sometimes treated as conspecific under the name White-bearded Manakin (Manacus manacus). Alternatively, present species has been considered by some to be conspecific only with Orange-collared Manakin (Manacus aurantiacus). Hybridizes with White-collared Manakin (Manacus candei) in Panama (Bocas del Toro), where hybrid forms have been treated as a distinct species, Manacus cerritus. Hybridizes also with White-bearded Manakin (Manacus manacus) in Colombia (lower Cauca Valley, also south-western Cauca).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
vitellinus (Gould, 1843) - Panama (eastern from Bocas del Toro) and north-western Colombia (northern Chocó, and northern Antioquia around Golfo de Urabá).
amitinus Wetmore, 1959 - Escudo de Veraguas I, off northern Panama (Bocas del Toro).
milleri Chapman, 1915 - Northern Colombia in valleys of Sinú and lower Cauca.
viridiventris Griscom, 1929 - Western Colombia west of western Andes (south to south-western Cauca), also on eastern side in upper Cauca Valley.
