Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,100 m.
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay (B).
South-eastern Brazil (southern Goiás and southern Bahia south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and northern Uruguay.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Reported to hybridize with Small-billed Elaenia (Elaenia parvirostris ) in south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), but this disputed by subsequent authors.
