Larger freshwater lakes. From 750 - 2,500 m.
Canada (B), Mexico, USA (B).
Population
Estimated population is 11,000 - 21,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Recently separated from Western Grebe (Aechmophorus occidentalis), with which it was formely considered merely a light phase.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- clarkii (Lawrence, 1858) - Mexican Plateau from northern Chihuahua to northern Guerrero; Nayarit; (?) L Caballo (New Mexico).
- transitionalis Dickerman, 1986 - Western USA, north to Utah and Colorado.
