Subspecies
Formerly included Clark's Grebe (Aechmophorus clarkii), which until recently considered a colour morph.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- occidentalis (Lawrence, 1858) - South-western and south-central Canada, western and north-central USA. Winters Pacific coast south to Baja California.
- ephemeralis Dickerman, 1986 - Central-western and south-central Mexico.
