Subspecies
Commonly placed in genus Ara.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
nobilis (Linnaeus, 1758) - Eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil north of Amazon.
cumanensis (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823) - Northern Brazil south of lower Amazon to north-eastern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Red-shouldered Macaw (Diopsittaca cumanensis).
longipennis Neumann, 1931 - South-eastern Peru and north-eastern Bolivia to central and south-eastern Brazil.
