As there have been no verifiable reports since 1927 this species must be considered extinct.
Habitat
Open grassy woodlands and scrubby grasslands on broad river valleys and plains where termite mounds are abundant.

Status EX
Extinct. Initially locally common but thought to have been by 1902. It was observed again in 1918 and last reliable sighting was in 1927. Kiernan claims to have seen five birds in 1990. Decline probably due to drought, overgrazing, frequency of fires and spread of noxious weeds including prickly pear and habitat destruction. Predation of nests by introduced and native species may also have contributed.

Habits
Usually in pairs.
Food
Seeds of grasses and other plants, taken mainly from the ground.
Voice
A series of soft, musical whistles. A sharp, metallic alarm call.
Nest
A hollowed-out chamber in a termite's mound on the ground, entered through a narrow tunnel. Sometimes in a creek-bank.
Eggs (Guide)
Usually 5; close-grained, smooth, slightly lustrous, white; rounded; 20 - 22 x 17 - 18 mm. Incubation: by female.
Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Hooded Parrot (Psephotellus dissimilis) and Golden-shouldered Parrot (Psephotellus chrysopterygius).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Northern subspecies of Bluebonnet (Northiella haematogaster), with which it shares the brown upper parts, red shoulder patch, scarlet under-tail coverts, but has brown and yellow breast and rump and a blue face.
