Subspecies
May be more closely related to Rusty-necked Piculet (Picumnus fuscus). Subspecies juruanus and borbae, with red forehead streaks, sometimes treated as forming a separate species "Picumnus borbae", although from a biogeographical standpoint there are major objections.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
flavifrons Hargitt, 1889 - North-eastern Peru and western Brazil (along R Solimíµes).
juruanus Gyldenstolpe, 1941 - Eastern Peru to western Brazil (upper R Juruá).
purusianus Todd, 1946 - Western Brazil (upper R Purus).
wallacii Hargitt, 1889 - Middle and lower R Purus east to lower R Madeira.
borbae Pelzeln, 1870 - Lower R Madeira east to lower R Tapajós.
transfasciatus Hellmayr & Gyldenstolpe, 1937 - R Tapajós east to R Tocantins.
aurifrons Pelzeln, 1870 - Northern Mato Grosso from upper R Madeira east to upper R Tapajós.
