Habitat
Freshwater including inland streams, estuaries and occasionally sheltered bays.
New Zealand (E) (B).
Auckland Islands. Fossil remains have been found on South Island and Stewart Island (New Zealand).

Status EX
Extinct. Last observed in 1902. Decline was probably caused by hunting and predation by introduced pigs, rats, cats and dogs, being very easy to catch due to flightlessness.
