Estimated population is 670 - 6700 (2013) and stable.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) and Madagascar Buzzard (Buteo brachypterus), and possibly also with Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) and Rufous-tailed Hawk (Buteo ventralis). Has been considered conspecific with Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

Present species has alternatively been called Buteo tachardus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • oreophilus Hartert & Neumann, 1914   -  Highlands of Ethiopia south to Tanzania and Malawi.
  • trizonatus Rudebeck, 1957   -  South Africa (Western Cape and eastern Cape north to Limpopo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Forest Buzzard (Buteo trizonatus).
