Habitat
Lowland and montane forest, especially along rivers. Less common in tall secondary forest. From sea-level - 1,250 m.
Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture, trapping and hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Okinawa Rail (Hypotaenidia okinawae) and Barred Rail (Hypotaenidia torquata).
