Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-striped Forest-rail (Rallicula leucospila) and Forbes's Forest-rail (Rallicula forbesi).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- mayri (Hartert, 1930) - Cyclops Mts, north-eastern Irian Jaya.
- carmichaeli Diamond, 1969 - Torricelli and Bewani Mts, north-western Papua New Guinea.
