Subspecies
Closely related to Yellow-crowned Barbet (Psilopogon henricii) and Golden-naped Barbet (Psilopogon pulcherrimus), with all three sometimes thought to be conspecific or to form a superspecies and all are apparently related also to group including Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti), Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus) and Moustached Barbet (Psilopogon incognitus). Subspecies not well differentiated. Eastern Javan birds intermediate in size between those of western Java and those of Bali.
