Habitat
Open eucalypt woodlands and, less often, forests, often riparian associations, and grasslands with sparsely scattered shrubs and few or no trees, including farmland and other agricultural lands.

Range (Guide)
Australia (B).

Vagrant to New Zealand.

Australia generally, except Cape York Peninsula and the extreme south-west. Rare in Tasmania.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually in pairs, small parties, or especially during migration, large flocks.

Food
Invertebrates, mainly insects. Also nectar and occasionally fruit.

Voice
A musical 'chap chap'. Sweet, miner-like notes. Rattling scolds. Song includes mimicry.

Nest
A frail, open, shallow structure, composed of dried grasses and thin twigs, generally in a bush, tree or cleft in a stump.

Eggs (Guide)
2 or 3; white with purple-brown and grey blotches concentrated at the larger end; oval; about 22 x 17 mm. Incubation: about 12 days; by both sexes.

Young
Fledge in about 13 - 15 days. Fed by both parents.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Closest to Masked Woodswallow (Artamus personatus).

Similar Species
Juvenile with juvenile Masked Woodswallow (Artamus personatus).
