Subspecies
Notharchus macrorhynchos (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Guianan Puffbird (Notharchus macrorhynchos), White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus) and Buff-bellied Puffbird (Notharchus swainsoni) following SACC (2005).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
hyperrhynchus (P.L. Sclater, 1856) - Southern Mexico (Oaxaca) south to northern and north-eastern Venezuela, and south to Colombia, Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and western Brazil (east to R Tapajós and south to Mato Grosso). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus).
paraensis Sassi, 1932 - Lower Amazon Valley in Brazil (Pará east of R Tapajós and into northern Maranhío).
cryptoleucus van Rossem, 1934 - Pacific lowlands of El Salvador and north-western Nicaragua.
