Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,500 - 3,000 m, occasionally up to 3,100 m.
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.
South-western Colombia (Nariño) southern in Andes (on both slope in central Ecuador) to northern Peru (northern Piura and north-western Cajamarca).

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a monophyletic group with Black-collared Jay (Cyanolyca armillata ) and White-collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus ). All formerly considered conspecific, but differ in morphology and probably voice.
