Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Recent phylogenetic study based on morphology suggested an affiliation with White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis). Nominate subspecies and castaneus intergrade in northern Argentina. Individual variation in plumage possibly more marked than geographical variation.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
castaneus Ridgway, 1890 - North-central and eastern Bolivia, south-western Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul) and north-western Argentina (south-eastern Jujuy, northern Salta).
