Habitat
Dry savannah, arid plains, deserts and open mountain slopes, memi-arid or desert areas with only scattered trees and short grass. From sea-level - 3,500 m.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 5700 (2020) and decreasing.

Food
Mainly carrion. But also known to hunt, probably taking a variety of small reptiles, fish, birds and mammals, and has been observed apparently group-hunting flamingo.

Voice
Various hisses and cackles given at nest and, in aggression, at food.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus). Validity of subspecies questionable, as variation may be largely individual and clinal.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • tracheliotos (Forster, 1791)   -  Extreme south-western Morocco; southern Mauritania east to Ethiopia and Kenya, south to South Africa.
  • nubicus (H. Smith, 1829)   -  Egypt and northern Sudan.
  • negevensis Bruun, Mendelssohn & Bull, 1981   -  Southern Israel and Arabian Peninsula.
