Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, dry savanna, rural gardens, plantations. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay (B).

Introduced to Austria, Bahamas (E), Belgium, Bermuda, Cayman Islands (B), Chile, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Guadeloupe (B), Japan, Puerto Rico, Slovakia (Slovak Republic) (B), Spain (B), USA (B), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Cliff Parakeet (Myiopsitta luchsi), with which commonly considered conspecific.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • cotorra (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Southern Bolivia, Paraguay, southern Brazil and north-western Argentina.
  • monachus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  South-eastern Brazil, Uruguay and north-eastern Argentina.
  • calita (Jardine & Selby, 1830)   -  Western Argentina.
  • luchsi (Finsch, 1868)   -  Central Bolivia.
