Habitat
Lowland humid forest. In the dry season, it frequents the canopy of tall terra firme (not flooded) forest but, in the breeding season, appears to inhabit clearings with few scattered trees.
Northern Brazil in northern Maranhío and Pará; recent single records from Rondônia and Mato Grosso.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and fragmentation due to road construction, subsequent development and settlement, with accompanying illegal logging, is the main threat.

Food
Fruit, berries, seeds and nuts and, seasonally, on crops, especially maize.
Voice
High-pitched, vibrant 'greh' or 'kray' calls are softer than Aratinga parakeets.

Subspecies
Genus name often spelt Guaruba, but original spelling is Guarouba. Often placed in genus Aratinga.
