Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Bucco. Subspecies subtectus considered a distinct species by some authors.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

subtectus (Sclater, PL, 1860) - Caribbean Costa Rica south to western and north-central Colombia and north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lesser Pied Puffbird (Notharchus subtectus).
tectus (Boddaert, 1783) - Southern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Amazonian Brazil (eastern as far as Maranh�o).
picatus (Sclater, PL, 1856) - South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru to eastern Bolivia and west-central Brazil.
