Habitat
Inland wetlands. Also, arable land. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, USA (B), Venezuela.

Vagrant to Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Chile, Gambia, Grenada, Jamaica, Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Estimated population is 1,100,000 - 2,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • autumnalis (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  South-eastern Texas to central Panama. Also known as fulgens.
  • discolor P.L. Sclater and Salvin, 1873   -  Eastern Panama to South America, south to Ecuador in the west and northern Argentina in the east.
  • fulgens Friedmann, 1947   -  Southern US to Panama.
