The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
castigatus Bangs, 1901 - South-western Costa Rica and (?formerly) western Panama.
marmoratus (Gould, 1843) - Eastern Panama to northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
gujanensis (Gmelin, 1789) - South-eastern Venezuela, Guianas and Brazil (south to Mato Grosso) and extreme northern Paraguay.
medius Chapman, 1929 - Southern Venezuela and north-western Brazil.
buckleyi Chubb, C, 1919 - Base of eastern Andes of Colombia, eastern Ecuador and northern Peru.
rufogularis Blake, 1959 - Upper reaches of R Yavari, north-eastern Peru.
pachyrhynchus Tschudi, 1844 - Eastern Peru and possibly also western Bolivia.
