Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Phoenicurus. Females and first-year males in China are browner above, and possibly warrant separation as subspecies tenuirostris.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

fuliginosus (Vigors, 1831) - Eastern Afghanistan and Himalayas east to north-eastern and eastern China, south to north-western Thailand, Indochina and Hainan I.
affinis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1906) - Taiwan.
