Subspecies
Uncanny resemblance in plumage to Creamy-breasted Canastero (Asthenes dorbignyi) presumed due to convergence. Description of darker Peruvian subspecies griseipectus (type locality in Cuzco) is matched by specimens from near city of La Paz, in Bolivia (not far from type locality of nominate). In addition, populations from Puno evidently differ from those in Apurímac and Cuzco. Further study, particularly examination of the types, is warranted.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
griseipectus Chapman, 1919 - Dry Andean valleys of southern Peru (Apurímac, Cuzco, Puno).
striaticeps (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838) - Andes of Bolivia (southern from La Paz) and northern Argentina (south to Catamarca and Tucumán).
