Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in sub-tropical and tropical south-west and central Pacific Ocean, moving to the northern central Pacific in the non-breeding season.

Australia (B), French Polynesia, Marshall Islands (NB), New Caledonia, New Zealand (B), Norfolk Island, Northern Mariana Islands (NB), United States Minor Outlying Islands (NB), USA.

Vagrant to Japan.

Population
Estimated population is 8,000,000 - 10,000,000 (2010).

Food
Fish, squid and other marine life.

Voice
High-pitched 'wi-wi-wi-wi' uttered on the ground and in flight, 'ha-ha-ha' uttered from the ground and from within nesting burrows. Usually silent at sea.

Nest
In a chamber at the end of a burrow, lined with fresh green leaves and litter. Also in crevices in rocks. In colonies.

1; white; oval; about 51 x 37 mm.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous.

Subspecies
Said to interbreed with Chatham Petrel (Pterodroma axillaris) forming a superspecies.

No subspecies.
