Habitat
Breeds in grass, reed, and sedge marshes. During non-breeding season and on passage, in wetlands, including tidal flats, saltmarshes, rivers, wet grassland, saltpans and aquaculture ponds.

Range (Guide)

China (mainland) (B) (NB), Japan (B) (NB), Mongolia (B), North Korea (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), South Korea (NB).

Vagrant to Taiwan (China) (NB).

Resident on Hokkaido, northern Japan. Also breeds in north-eastern China and adjacent extreme south-eastern Russia. Winters in Korea and in and around Jiangsu, central-eastern China.

Population
Estimated population is 1,700 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Loss and degradation of wetlands in its breeding and wintering grounds, principally due to conversion to agriculture, but also industrial and economic development, are the main threats.

Similar Species
Siberian Crane (Leucogeranus leucogeranus) and Whooping Crane (Grus americana) which have black primaries and white necks and Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) which has a grey body.
