Voice
A very hoarse, dry, hissing screech uttered in flight. After dusk and errie, long shrill 'skkeear'.

Subspecies
Recently considered part of masked-owl group, but apparently more closely related to Barn Owl (Tyto alba). Subspecies pelengensis frequently misspelt "pelingensis".

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rosenbergii (Schlegel, 1866) - Sulawesi and Sangihe.
pelengensis Neumann, 1939 - Banggai Is (Peleng).
