Subspecies
Closest to Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill (Tockus leucomelas) and Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill (Tockus flavirostris), but also close to Monteiro's Hornbill (Tockus monteiri) and Red-billed Hornbill (Tockus erythrorhynchus), based on similar calls and behaviour, and DNA studies. Subspecies jacksoni distinctive, often considered a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- deckeni (Cabanis, 1869) - Ethiopia, southern Somalia, Kenya (except north-west) and Tanzania.
- jacksoni (Ogilvie-Grant, 1891) - Arid savanna of north-eastern Uganda and north-western Kenya.
