Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 600 - 2,600 m, occasionally down to 300 m.

Subspecies
Appears to be closely related to Spectacled Barwing (Actinodura ramsayi).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
egertoni Gould, 1836 - Central Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (east-central Arunachal Pradesh).
lewisi Ripley, 1948 - Eastern Arunachal Pradesh and north-western Myanmar.
khasiana Godwin-Austen, 1876 - Meghalaya, southern Assam (northern Cachar), Nagaland and Manipur, in north-eastern India.
ripponi Ogilvie-Grant & La Touche, 1907 - Mizoram (north-eastern India), and north-eastern and south-western Myanmar and southern China (western and north-western Yunnan).
