The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
stenorhynchus Godwin-Austen, 1877 - Extreme north-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh) and extreme northern Myanmar.
austeni Hume, 1881 - North-eastern India (Meghalaya east to Nagaland and south to Mizoram), south-eastern Bangladesh and northern Myanmar.
ochraceiceps Walden, 1873 - South-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim), north-western Thailand, southern China (southern Yunnan) and northern Indochina.
alius Riley, 1940 - Northern Thailand, southern Laos and Vietnam (central and southern Annam).
