Subspecies
Part of a species group which includes also Great Tit (Parus major), Turkestan Tit (Parus bokharensis) and White-naped Tit (Machlolophus nuchalis). Nominate subspecies and yunnanensis intergrade in western Nepal.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
monticolus Vigors, 1831 - Western and central Himalayas from northern Pakistan east to western Nepal and south-western China (southern Xizang).
yunnanensis La Touche, 1922 - Eastern Himalayas east to north-eastern India (including southern Assam), central and southern China (southern Gansu and southern Shaanxi south to southern Yunnan and Guizhou), west, northern and north-eastern Myanmar, extreme north-western Vietnam and central Laos.
legendrei Delacour, 1927 - Langbian, in south-central Vietnam.
