Primary and tall secondary forests, in dense, swampy areas, overgrown rubber estates, scrub and secondary thickets. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss and degradation through illegal logging and land conversion is the main threat.

Subspecies
In the past was sometimes placed in a separate genus, Gigantipitta, on account of very large size. Closely related to Schneider's Pitta (Hydrornis schneideri), and also to Blue Pitta (Hydrornis cyaneus). May also share some affinities with Hydrornis group.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

caeruleus (Raffles, 1822) - Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
hosei (Baker, ECS, 1918) - Northern, south-west, central and eastern Borneo.
