First Described (Guide)
Temminck, 1830

Habitat
EDges of dense forested streams and rivers in primary lowland dipterocarp forest to lower montane forest, mangroves. From sea-level - 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Habitat loss through clearing is the main threat.

Food
Aquatic invertebrates, small fish, lizards.

Voice
High-pitched squeaks, uttered in flight, harsher than Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis).

Nest
In burrows excavated in steep mud banks along forested waterways, usually near running water.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • peninsulae Laubmann, 1941   -  Southern Myanmar and western Thailand south to Sumatra, and Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malay Blue-banded Kingfisher (Alcedo peninsulae).
  • euryzona Temminck, 1830   -  Java.


Similar Species
Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting) both of which lack the breast band in the male and brownish upperpatrs in the female.
