(Temminck, 1815)

Habitat
Evergreen and semi-evergreen rainforests, including swampy areas, dry hill forest and secondary forest with sufficient bamboo. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B) (NB), Malaysia (B) (NB), Myanmar (B) (NB), Thailand (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction through logging, conversion to agriculture, trapping for the cage-bird industry, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Sumatran birds have traditionally been placed in subspecies sumatrana, but name ocellata has priority.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • oculeus (Temminck, 1815)   -  South-eastern Myanmar and south-western Thailand to Malay Peninsula.
  • ocellatus (Raffles, 1822)   -  Sumatra.
  • borneensis Ogilvie-Grant, 1892   -  North-central and extreme north-eastern Borneo.
