Habitat loss through conversion to agriculture, hunting and egg collection are the main threats.

Voice
Loud territorial calls uttered by males, rising in pitch and grading into a staccato series. Noisy, cackling contact calls uttered by feeding birds.

Subspecies
Formerly included in Dusky Scrubfowl (Megapodius freycinet). Generally considered to form part of the Dusky Scrubfowl (Megapodius freycinet) superspecies. Apparently very close to Philippine Scrubfowl (Megapodius cumingii).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

nicobariensis Blyth, 1846 - Central and northern Nicobar Is, except Chaura and Car Nicobar.
abbotti Oberholser, 1919 - Great and Little Nicobar Is.
