Upper tropical and subtropical zones of Colombian Andes southern from Antioquia, Santander and Norte de Santander.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

White-naped Brush-finch (Atlapetes albinucha) and Yellow-throated Brush-Finch (Atlapetes gutturalis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Atlapetes albinucha following SACC (2005).

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of White-naped Brush-finch (Atlapetes albinucha).
