Habitat
Dense undergrowth of moist evergreen forest, often in steep gullies, especially where ferns, mossy rocks and fallen trees abound. From 1,500 - 2,500 m, occasionally up to 3,100 m.
Eastern Nepal east to north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Destruction and fragmentation of forest, chiefly through logging and shifting cultivation is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
May form a superspecies with Rusty-throated Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis badeigularis) and often treated as conspecific, but recent museum and field studies support treatment as separate species.
