Habitat
Lowland, tall podocarp / hardwood forests with a high diversity of plant species. Rarely found in modified forests, including selectively logged forests.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cinereus! (Gmelin, 1788) - South Island, New Zealand. Probably extinct. Last sightings were in 1967.
wilsoni Bonaparte, 1850 - The Hunua Ranges, Mataraua, Kaharoa, Rotoehu, Pureora and Mapara forests, and Te Urewera National Park of the North Island, New Zealand. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, North Island Kokako (Callaeas wilsoni).
